Dictionary Skills

Hello my friends...I am sitting here looking out on the beautiful golf course that I am staying on in Boca Raton, Florida.... Yes! It is spring break! I am relaxed and drinking a yummy cup of coffee before I head on out to the beach!

Before I go and soak up some rays, I wanted to share what I did with my kiddos before break. I don't know about you, but dictionary skills tend to be a bit difficult for my little ones. So I had to create something that would be fun and keep their interest while plodding through the dictionary!

I created Dictionary Detectives! Normally I would put this activity in my Word Work Center but I decided to do it as a whole class activity instead. The students had to solve The Case of the Unknown Word! It really was fun and they couldn't wait to get to the end of the mini-book to find out the secret message! They were working feverishly!

They used the words on the briefcase task cards to guide them through the dictionary. They had to write the guide words, the page number, and the definition of each word. Then at the bottom of each page they had to write the mystery letters to help solve the case. I was really impressed with how well they did!

It definitely kept my little ones busy and I have to say they were pretty quick finding the words.

If you are interested in this unit, check it out in my tpt store...

Thanks again for stopping by :)

Hugs,
Anna
