Hi Friends...I have a jam-packed week this week, so I thought I would get a head start on Columbus Day and get them busy with our newest Flip-Flap Book CRAFTIVITY! I was soooooo excited to make this one with my class so I started a little early...hee-hee :)
This is our third flip-flap book this year and I don't even have to review the directions anymore with them. They know exactly what to do...Ahhhhh...a Teacher's Dream Come True...and so early in the year! Can I get a Woot-Woot!
So I began my lesson the other day by using our Scholastic News on Christopher Columbus. I also showed the Scholastic News video that corresponds to the packet to get our minds thinking about Columbus. The next morning I read a book to them called In 1492 by Jean Marzollo. It's a quick little story about Columbus but it also has a very informative Author's Note in the beginning with some GREAT information about Columbus's voyage and the preparation for his voyage. After we read the book, we created an anchor chart with some of the most important facts about Columbus that we read.
We also used our map to show where Columbus's voyage began and where he landed! We also labeled the continents as well :)
After we created our anchor chart, I showed the little ones our Columbus Flip-Flap Book BOAT and the oooohs and ahhhhhs happened again! I think they love being active and moving around a bit...it just keeps them motivated which makes me a happy camper. I was amazingly surprised with how well they did with creating detailed sentences using the phrases from our anchor chart. Impressed I was! We only started working on it today and about half of my kiddos are done with all of their writing! I am a happy teacher. I am hoping to finish the rest tomorrow and get them hung up in the hallway for Columbus Day! Here are some pics of our progress today....
Tomorrow it's on to the BOAT! I cannot wait to hang the finished projects up in the hallway! I have been getting such a wonderful response to my flip-flap books....and I have sooooo much fun making them!

Next year, I plan on doing my Ship-Shaped Theme Writing Booklet about Christopher Columbus! Every other year I try to switch things up a bit in my classroom so that I don't get too bored with the activities by doing them year after year, so I try to alternate activities for my own sanity!! Here is the activity I am planning on doing next year....
We will complete the writing and activities in the ship-shaped booklet all about Columbus and put them in our Interactive Notebooks. The kiddos L.O.V.E. interactive notebooks so this is a no brainer for me!
Update: Here is a completed version of my Boat-Shaped Interactive Notebook for Columbus Day! My kiddos LOVED every minute of it!
